The production quality is pristine, with no distracting artifacts, though a few scenes (particularly the ending) feel slightly rushed—like the narrator knew something the listener didn’t. I’m a fan of Roberts’ ability to turn the mundane into a threat, but here, the payoff feels a bit too tidy. The real triumph is how Giuliani sells the suffocating atmosphere; by the time Lila’s phone dies, you’ll be checking your own signal strength. I spent two days listening to this in chunks because the book demands it—each pause left me paranoid about what I’d walk into next.
