In the Serpent's Wake

As an editor, I've had the pleasure of working with many audiobooks, but Rachel Hartman's In the Serpent's Wake is something special. From the opening pages, I was hooked – nay, ensnared – by the author's masterful storytelling and the narrator's delightful performance. The result is an audiobook that is, at once, both an engaging adventure and a poignant exploration of the human condition. I was swept up in Arahenna's journey, cheering her on as she overcame seemingly insurmountable obstacles and discovered hidden strengths. The pacing is expertly managed, with McEwan moving seamlessly between action-packed sequences and quieter moments of introspection. If I have one minor quibble, it's that some of the supporting characters feel a tad underdeveloped – but perhaps that's a deliberate choice, highlighting the protagonist's central role in the story. Overall, though, this is a minor complaint in an otherwise stellar performance. With its lush world-building, memorable characters, and a compelling narrative that will leave you breathless, In the Serpent's Wake is a must-listen for fans of historical fantasy and adventure.
