I’ll be honest: I’ve listened to *a lot* of military sci-fi, and *Invasion* stood out because it refuses to romanticize war. Weil’s Trellixians aren’t cartoonish villains—they’re an unstoppable force of nature, and humanity’s response isn’t glamorous. The early chapters are a gut-punch: entire worlds fall in paragraphs, not epic last stands. It’s refreshing (and harrowing) to see a story where victory isn’t guaranteed by plot armor but by sheer, desperate ingenuity. The space battles are *loud* in the best way—Owen’s narration makes you *feel* the concussive blasts of railguns and the sickening silence of a ship’s hull breaching. That said, the book isn’t perfect. The dialogue can occasionally dip into exposition-heavy military jargon, and one subplot involving a rogue scientist feels like a detour from the main war’s momentum. But Owen’s performance sells even the weaker moments; his ability to distinguish between the stoic Admiral Streth and the panicked civilians adds layers the text alone might miss. The production quality is flawless—no distracting edits or volume spikes—just immersive, cinematic audio. If you love your sci-fi with high stakes, moral ambiguity, and a narrator who *commands* your attention, this is a must-listen. Just don’t expect a happy ride.
