Listening to Jo Sands narrate Dr. West’s story feels like being let in on a long-overdue secret. Sands doesn’t dramatize—she steadies, her voice embodying West’s no-nonsense intellect and grace. The production is crisp, with subtle pacing that mirrors the methodical nature of West’s work. What stands out is how the audiobook resists sensationalism; instead, it leans into the power of persistence, making moments like West’s eventual recognition by the Air Force and induction into the National Inventors Hall of Fame feel deeply earned. That said, the middle section lags slightly—the technical details of satellite geodesy, while important, slow the momentum. And while Sands is excellent, a warmer tonal shift during personal reflections could have deepened the emotional intimacy. Still, this is audiobook storytelling at its most purposeful. It doesn’t shout, but it lingers—much like the impact of GPS itself, quietly essential, everywhere.
