I’ve listened to a *lot* of Bible audiobooks, and this one stands out for its intellectual honesty. Michael Bernstein’s narration of Torah portions feels like a respected professor reading aloud—crisp, deliberate, but with occasional warmth creeping in during poetic passages (his rendering of Song of Songs is surprisingly tender). Tovah Feldshuh’s Prophets, though, are the revelation: her voice cracks with righteous fury in Isaiah, then softens into mournful melody for Jeremiah. The only misstep? Norma Fire’s Esther feels oddly flat, lacking the ironic bite the story demands. The pacing is deliberate, almost unhurried, which suits the text but might frustrate listeners used to brisker modern audiobooks. Some transitions between narrators are jarring (Bruce Feiler’s smooth, almost conversational Psalms clash with Kathy Ford’s more formal Proverbs), but that’s a minor quibble. What truly impresses is how the production resists the urge to *perform* the text—no fake ‘ancient’ accents, no over-emoting. Instead, it treats the Tanakh as what it is: a complex, often contradictory library of books meant to be engaged with, not just revered. The inclusion of JPS’s footnotes (read judiciously) adds layers without disrupting flow. If you want the Bible as a scholarly yet soulful experience—not a sermon, not a spectacle—this is your version.
