One moment, you’re admiring Juan Carlos’s nerve during the 1981 coup attempt (Payne’s play-by-play is gripping, and Alonso’s narration crackles with tension); the next, you’re wincing at the petty vanities and financial scandals that dogged his later years. The book’s structure—alternating between sweeping historical context and intimate detail—keeps the listening experience dynamic, though the middle section on Franco-era maneuvering tests patience with its density. Alonso’s performance is mostly excellent, though his delivery occasionally flattens during lists of political figures (a minor quibble in a 19-hour marathon). The production quality is flawless—no distracting edits or volume shifts—but I did wish for more tonal variation in the latter chapters, where the king’s decline risks feeling monotonous. Still, Payne’s unflinching analysis of how Juan Carlos’s early pragmatism curdled into entitlement makes this essential for anyone who thinks monarchy is just pageantry.
