Happily, Pham avoids those pitfalls by grounding the story in specificity—Blair’s career ambitions, Declan’s family dynamics, and the ways their lives have diverged in telling ways. Siu’s narration elevates the material even further; her Declan isn’t just a brooding ex-boyfriend, but a fully realized man grappling with his own insecurities. The audiobook’s pacing is a standout, with no sagging moments between emotional crescendos. That said, I wish the side characters had more dimension—Blair’s best friend, in particular, felt like a plot device rather than a person. And while the HEA is satisfying, the final act rushes through a few key resolutions, which might frustrate readers who prefer meticulous emotional payoff. Still, Siu’s performance alone makes this worth the listen, especially for those who love audiobooks with palpable chemistry. The banter is sharp, the tension is well-earned, and by the end, you’ll be rooting for these two as hard as you did in high school.
