Phillips writes Hadley as a genuinely flawed protagonist: she’s manipulative, secretive, and sometimes downright unlikable, which makes her eventual vulnerability hit harder. Zach, meanwhile, isn’t just a gruff alpha with a heart of gold; he’s a man whose sense of justice is so rigid it’s practically a character flaw. Their dynamic is a masterclass in *earned* tension, and the audiobook’s dual narration sells it perfectly. Jason Clarke’s Zach sounds like a man who’s one wrong word away from snapping, while Samantha Cook’s Hadley delivers lines with a mix of exhaustion and defiance that makes you *feel* the weight of her choices. That said, the production isn’t flawless. The pacing in the first act is *almost* too breakneck—Hadley and Zach’s initial confrontation lacks a beat or two of breathing room, and Clarke’s narration occasionally verges on *too* growly in quieter scenes, making some dialogue harder to parse. (A minor nitpick, but worth noting if you’re sensitive to vocal fry.) The middle act also leans heavily on repetitive ‘will they/won’t they’ cycles, though Phillips redeems it with a third-act twist that reframes the entire power dynamic. What ultimately makes this audiobook stand out is how *lived-in* the conflict feels.
