About This Audiobook

Step into the clammy fog of 13th-century England with *Justice for the Damned*, where Prioress Eleanor of Tyndal trades prayers for peril on her way to Amesbury Priory. Priscilla Royal doesn’t just drop you into another dusty convent tale—she crafts a sharp-edged historical thriller where piety and politics bleed into each other like ink on parchment. The setting isn’t just backdrop; it’s a character, with priory politics as treacherous as the muddy roads Eleanor must traverse. When a brutal murder disrupts the Feast of Saint Melor, Eleanor’s sharp mind and sharper tongue are forced into action, uncovering layers of corruption that reach beyond the convent walls. Royal’s prose is lean and unflinching, avoiding the purple excesses of many historical mysteries—this is a tale where every whispered prayer could hide a lie and every act of charity might be a transaction.

Editor's Review ★★★★☆

AudioBook Atlas

I’ll admit, I approached *Justice for the Damned* with skepticism—‘another medieval nun solves crimes’ isn’t exactly a fresh premise. But Royal’s razor-sharp plotting and McCaddon’s magnetic narration won me over faster than a thief in the night. The murder at the heart of the story isn’t just a plot device; it’s a catalyst that forces Eleanor to confront the rot beneath the priory’s pious veneer, and Royal never lets the mystery overshadow the human cost of the investigation. That said, the audiobook isn’t without its stumbles. At times, the transition between scenes feels abrupt, like flipping channels on a medieval radio, and the resolution arrives with a speed that borders on abrupt, leaving a few threads dangling. McCaddon’s performance, however, is worth the price of admission alone—her rendering of Sister Jocelyn, a timid but fiercely intelligent nun, is a masterclass in vocal restraint, making her one of the standout characters in a crowded field. If you crave historical mysteries that prioritize intellect over atmosphere, this one’s for you. Just don’t expect a neat bow at the end.
