The murder at the heart of the story isn’t just a plot device; it’s a catalyst that forces Eleanor to confront the rot beneath the priory’s pious veneer, and Royal never lets the mystery overshadow the human cost of the investigation. That said, the audiobook isn’t without its stumbles. At times, the transition between scenes feels abrupt, like flipping channels on a medieval radio, and the resolution arrives with a speed that borders on abrupt, leaving a few threads dangling. McCaddon’s performance, however, is worth the price of admission alone—her rendering of Sister Jocelyn, a timid but fiercely intelligent nun, is a masterclass in vocal restraint, making her one of the standout characters in a crowded field. If you crave historical mysteries that prioritize intellect over atmosphere, this one’s for you. Just don’t expect a neat bow at the end.
