I also appreciated how he handles the Danish translation (this is the Danish-language edition, after all): the pacing feels natural, never rushed, even in the terser exchanges. That said, his reading of the female characters in ‘Den korte, lykkelige liv’ occasionally veers into monotone, as if he’s unsure how much emotion to inject. It’s a minor quibble, but in a collection this lean, every misstep stands out. The production itself is impeccably minimalist—no introductory fanfare, no chapter transitions, just the stories unfolding like a series of snapshots. This works brilliantly for Hemingway��s style, though I wished for a touch more atmospheric sound design in the African-set stories; the utter silence sometimes feels *too* sterile, as if the audiobook is afraid to breathe. Still, the standout here is ‘En rent, veloplyst sted,’ where Schlosser’s timing turns a simple conversation about an abortion into something devastating. It’s not a ‘cozy listen,’ but it’s an essential one—like a shot of whiskey neat. Best consumed in one sitting, preferably somewhere quiet, where the weight of the stories can land undistracted.
