About This Audiobook

Matthew Costello delivers a sharp, dialogue-rich mystery that blends the cutthroat world of television development with the cozy charm of a small English village. What starts as a promising workshop in Cherringham—where six writers compete for a coveted TV deal—quickly spirals into a high-stakes game of cat and mouse when sinister threats replace script revisions. The premise is clever: what happens when ambition meets paranoia in a place where everyone has something to hide? Costello keeps the tension dialed up, trading typical cozy tropes for a darker, more cerebral thriller that still feels grounded in human stakes. The audiobook thrives on its ensemble cast of flawed, driven characters, each with their own secrets and motives, making every interaction crackle with potential danger. If you crave mysteries where the real mystery isn’t whodunit but *who’s next*, this is your audiobook.

Neil Dudgeon’s narration is the secret weapon here, a masterclass in tonal versatility. His crisp RP accent lends the setting authenticity, while his ability to shift seamlessly between wry humor, simmering tension, and outright menace breathes life into Costello’s sharp, conversational prose. Dudgeon nails the rhythms of Costello’s dialogue, making even the most mundane exchanges feel charged with subtext. He’s particularly effective in the quieter moments—pausing just long enough to let the listener feel the dread creeping in—before launching into a rapid-fire confrontation or revelation. The result is an immersive experience that makes the 3.5 hours disappear.

Editor's Review ★★★★☆

AudioBook Atlas

I went into *Killer Pitch* expecting a light cozy mystery, and while it delivers on that front, it’s so much more than a gentle puzzle set in an idyllic village. Costello’s script has the biting wit of a BBC drama like *The Fall*, where every character is a potential suspect and every line of dialogue feels like a loaded gun. The threats escalate from cryptic notes to outright sabotage, and the pacing never lets up—even when the setting remains picturesque. My favorite stretch is during a blackout scene in the writers’ cottage, where Dudgeon’s narration hitches slightly, mimicking the characters’ disorientation and making the terror palpable. That said, the audiobook isn’t without flaws. The sheer number of characters (six writers, plus locals and production staff) can get confusing early on, and I found myself rewinding a few times to keep track of who’s who. Additionally, a couple of the threats felt a bit convenient—more plot contrivances than organic developments—but these are minor quibbles in an otherwise gripping listen. Dudgeon’s performance elevates the material, though I wish some of the quieter scenes had even more breathing room to let the suspense linger. All in all, *Killer Pitch* is a standout for fans of British mysteries with bite, where the real draw isn’t the village’s charm but the rot simmering beneath it.
