About This Audiobook

Set in a lushly rendered 19th-century Sicily brimming with dark magic and whispered curses, *Kingdom of the Wicked* follows Emilia, a witch whose quiet life shatters when her twin sister Vittoria is brutally murdered. What begins as a personal quest for justice spirals into a dangerous alliance with Wrath, one of the Seven Princes of Hell—each as beguiling as they are treacherous. Kerri Maniscalco blends Italian folklore, occult rituals, and a simmering slow-burn romance into a fantasy that feels both fresh and classically gothic. The world drips with atmosphere: candlelit catacombs, blood pacts, and the ever-present scent of sulfur beneath sweet orange blossoms. Marisa Calin’s narration elevates the tension with a poised, intimate delivery that captures Emilia’s grief, fury, and growing power. Her voice shifts subtly between characters, giving each demon prince a distinct aura—especially Wrath, whose voice coils with predatory charm. The audiobook’s production is crisp, with well-timed silences that let the dread breathe. While the plot leans into familiar YA fantasy beats, the Italian-inspired witchcraft and morally gray supernatural politics offer a refreshing twist. This is a binge-worthy listen for fans of *Captive Prince* meets *The Witcher*, where every alliance costs blood and desire is just another form of magic.

Editor's Review ★★★★

AudioBook Atlas

I went into *Kingdom of the Wicked* expecting a lush, romantic fantasy with a revenge plot, but what I got was far more visceral. Marisa Calin’s narration is hypnotic—she doesn’t just read Emilia; she embodies her quiet rage and cautious vulnerability with such nuance that I often forgot I was listening to a single performer. The way she draws out the hush before a spell, or drops her voice to a whisper when the demons speak, makes the listening experience incredibly immersive. The Italian flavor of the magic system—herbs, saints, blood oaths—gives the world authenticity, and the slow unraveling of Vittoria’s death kept me hooked through all twelve hours. That said, the middle drags slightly as Emilia cycles through the demon princes, and some of their dialogue feels overly melodramatic, even for infernal beings. Still, the final act delivers brutal twists and emotional payoff. The chemistry between Emilia and Wrath builds deliberately, which I appreciated—no insta-love here. If you’re okay with a few predictable tropes in exchange for rich atmosphere and a fiercely performed lead, this audiobook is a standout. Just don’t listen late at night—the shadows feel sharper with headphones on.
