But within 20 minutes, John Bogle—via Barry Abrams’ masterful narration—had me scribbling notes like a convert. Abrams nails Bogle’s voice: imagine your favorite professor, the one who could make tax policy riveting, if that professor also had the moral urgency of a preacher. The pacing is deliberate, almost leisurely, which works beautifully for Bogle’s anecdote-rich style. When he recounts his early days at Vanguard or skewers hedge fund managers, Abrams’ timing turns what could be dry history into something vivid and personal. That said, this isn’t a book for everyone. Bogle’s disdain for active investing borders on dogma at times—he dismisses even well-reasoned counterarguments with a wave—and his repeated laments about ‘the old days’ of fiduciary duty can feel nostalgic to a fault. The audiobook also suffers slightly from its live-event roots; some chapters meander like a keynote speech, and the lack of clear chapter transitions can make it hard to jump back in after a pause. But these are quibbles. The real magic here is how Bogle (and Abrams) make complex ideas *feel* simple without oversimplifying. When Bogle argues that ‘enough’ isn’t a number but a mindset, or eviscerates the cult of CEO worship, it’s delivered with such conviction that you’ll either nod along or want to argue back—which, frankly, is the mark of great nonfiction. If you’ve ever suspected the financial industry is gaslighting you, this audiobook will hand you the receipts—and maybe, just maybe, the courage to opt out.
