About This Audiobook

Fred Vargas delivers a gothic-tinged mystery where folklore and modern horror collide. When a series of ritualistic drownings rocks the Cotentin peninsula, Commissaire Adamsberg finds himself entangled in a centuries-old vendetta. The twist? The perpetrator isn’t a flesh-and-blood criminal but a spectral force exploiting local superstitions to punish descendants of ancient sorcerers. Vargas’ prose oozes atmosphere, blending the eerie quiet of rural France with bursts of surreal violence. This isn’t a whodunit—it’s a battle against the impossible, where logic bends under the weight of myth. The audiobook’s claustrophobic tension lingers long after the final sentence, making it a standout in the genre. Thierry Janssen’s narration is the secret weapon here, his gravelly baritone cutting through Vargas’ dense, meandering prose with hypnotic precision. Janssen’s pacing never falters, even during the storys most confusing tangents, and his characterizations—especially Adamsberg’s distracted brilliance—feel alive. The production’s subtle sound design (think creaking floorboards and distant waves) amplifies the dread without overpowering the story. If you crave mysteries that dig deeper than clues and red herrings, this is your audiobook.

Editor's Review ★★★★☆

AudioBook Atlas

Thierry Janssen’s narration is the reason I pressed play on this audiobook in the first place—and he absolutely delivers. His voice has this rough, lived-in quality that fits Adamsberg’s rumpled, intuitive detective perfectly. Janssen doesn’t just read the words; he inhabits them, shifting effortlessly between Adamsberg’s dry humor, his crew’s dry skepticism, and the eerie cadence of villagers whispering about curses. The production quality is top-tier, too, with a sound mix that places you right in the salty air of Normandy without drowning out the dialogue. That said, the story’s biggest strength is also its most glaring weakness. Vargas’ love for digressions and obscure folklore can feel indulgent, especially when Adamsberg’s team spends an entire chapter debating whether a 17th-century witch’s grimoire is real. The pacing lags in those sections, and by the midpoint, even Janssen’s gravitas struggles to keep the inertia going. Still, the payoff is worth it. The climax, when Adamsberg faces off against a force that’s as much myth as murderer, is chillingly original. If you’re not squeamish about supernatural horror masquerading as a police procedural—or if you’re a fan of Adamsberg’s idiosyncratic charm—this audiobook is a must-listen. Janssen’s performance alone is worth the credit.
