L'Illusion

I’ll admit, I rolled my eyes at first—*another* trapped-in-a-remote-location thriller? But *L’Illusion* disarmed me within an hour. Chattam’s real talent lies in making the mundane terrifying: a missing set of keys, a misplaced radio, the way characters start finishing each other’s sentences not out of intimacy but because they’ve been repeating the same conversations for days. The first act is slow, almost *too* slow, but that’s the point: you’re meant to squirm in the tedium before the violence hits. When it does, it’s brutal and sudden, like a chair leg snapping under weight. Morillon’s performance is stellar, though not without flaws. His pacing in the early chapters occasionally drags, as if he’s unsure whether to lean into the creeping dread or the procedural elements. And while his female voices are distinct, they sometimes veer into caricature—particularly the resort’s receptionist, whose breathy tone feels at odds with her character’s sharp pragmatism. Still, his ability to convey exhaustion through vocal texture (the way sentences trail off, the swallowed syllables) is phenomenal. The audio production is otherwise flawless: no distracting edits, no uneven volume levels, just a relentless, icy atmosphere. If you love thrillers that marinate in dread rather than sprinting to the next corpse, this is your book. Just don’t start it before bed—trust me on that.
