La cicatriz [The Scar]

I’ll be honest: *La cicatriz* is not a casual listen. At 25+ hours, it’s a commitment, and Miéville’s prose—rich with neologisms and layered with political allegory—can feel like wading through treacle at times. But when it *works*, it’s electric. The story follows Bellis Coldwine, a linguist-turned-exile, as she’s press-ganged onto Armada, a roving city of outcasts that’s equal parts *Waterworld* and *Moby-Dick* on hallucinogens. The worldbuilding is so tactile you’ll swear you smell the salt and oil of the ships, and the central mystery of the ‘scar’ (a rift in space-time that may or may not be sentient) lingers like a splinter in your brain. Belda’s narration is mostly stellar, though I docked half a star for two reasons: first, his delivery of female characters occasionally veers into caricature, a jarring contrast to his otherwise nuanced performance. Second, the audio production occasionally suffers from uneven volume levels—whispers get lost, while action scenes can peak abruptly. That said, his ability to convey the book’s eerie, almost *biological* dread (especially in scenes involving the mosca, a race of insectoid people) is chilling. The pacing drags in the middle during dense infodumps about Bas-Lag’s geopolitics, but the final act—a surreal, violent crescendo involving a sentient ship and a revolution—is worth the slog. This isn’t a book for everyone, but if you love your fantasy weird, cerebral, and dripping with ambivalence, it’s a triumph.
