About This Audiobook

There are *classics*, and then there are works that feel like they were written yesterday—*La Divina Commedia* is the latter. This isn’t just a recitation of terza rima; it’s a full-bodied descent into the afterlife, voiced by the gravelly, mesmerizing baritone of Ivano Marescotti. His performance doesn’t just narrate Dante’s journey—it *drags* you into it, whether he’s croaking like Chiron in the Eighth Circle or whispering the betrayals of Lucifer with spine-tingling precision. The new edit sharpens the infernal acoustics: the hiss of flames, the echo of damned souls, the clank of purgatorial gates—every syllable lands with cinematic weight. The poetry’s razor-sharp, but the real magic is the restraint; Marescotti trusts Dante’s language to do the heavy lifting, delivering a performance that’s equal parts scholarly and sinister. This edition’s pacing respects the original’s architecture without drowning in archaic tedium, making it accessible to modern ears without sacrificing its medieval bite.

Editor's Review ★★★★☆

AudioBook Atlas

Ivano Marescotti’s narration is the reason to own this audiobook. His voice, rich as aged wine and rough as cobblestones, transforms *The Divine Comedy* from a dusty artifact into a living nightmare. He doesn’t just read the lines—he inhabits them. When Dante wades through the boiling blood of the violent, Marescotti’s growl makes the air thick with heat; when Ugolino recounts his frozen feast, his delivery is so starkly pained it feels like eavesdropping on a confession. The production leans into the theatrical: footsteps on the shores of Acheron, the groan of souls in Malebolge, the metallic rasp of Lucifer’s wings. It’s immersive to a fault—at one point, I swear I felt the heat of the Eighth Circle seeping through my headphones. That said, the edit isn’t without quirks. Some of the ambient layers (crackling fire, distant screams) can feel like overkill in the upper circles, where subtlety might serve Dante’s verse better. And while Marescotti’s range is impressive, his shifts between characters occasionally border on caricature—Paolo and Francesca’s tragic romance loses some of its gravitas when their voices veer into operatic melodrama. Still, these are minor sins in an otherwise masterful execution. By the time you reach Paradise, you won’t just *hear* the spheres of the blessed—you’ll *believe* in their music.
