I went into this expecting a dry, academic slog—a classic I’d dutifully endure rather than enjoy. Instead, I found myself riveted by Dante’s unflinching gaze at human frailty. The Virtual Voice narrator strikes a perfect balance: neither overly dramatic nor monotonous, but with enough gravitas to underscore the gravity of each sinner’s punishment or saint’s revelation. The annotations are a game-changer, tucked seamlessly into the narration so they feel like a scholar leaning over your shoulder to whisper context just as the text demands it. That said, the Inferno’s second half drags slightly—Dante’s obsession with Florentine politics and personal vendettas creeps in, making the later circles feel more like a medieval grudge list than a universal reckoning. And while the neutral tone keeps the focus on the text, I occasionally craved more vocal variety; a few moments of dramatic flair to match the horror of, say, Paolo and Francesca’s doomed embrace could have elevated the immersion. Still, the production’s restraint pays off in spades when Dante’s poetry hits its stride—like the chilling symmetry of Lucifer frozen in ice at the poem’s literal and thematic nadir.
