The mystery itself—a tangle of historical artifacts, political cover-ups, and a chillingly mundane murder—unfolds like a Palermo backstreet: narrow, sun-bleached, and full of dead ends that somehow circle back to the same corrupt core. The audiobook’s pacing mirrors this; it drags in the middle during procedural slog (a deliberate choice, but one that tests patience), then whiplashes into a finale so tense I actually paused to catch my breath. Chiara Anicito’s performance is *almost* flawless. Her Guarrasi is a masterclass in vocal texture—raspy when exhausted, razor-sharp when sarcastic, and heartbreakingly soft in rare moments of vulnerability. The supporting cast, though, occasionally blurs together; minor characters lack distinct vocal signatures, making a few dialogue-heavy scenes confusing. Still, the production’s ambient touches (distant church bells, the hum of a Vespa) ground the story in place better than any exposition could. My one gripe? The abrupt ending.
