I’ll admit, I approached *La Voce del fuoco* skeptical of yet another ‘mystic in antiquity’ tale, but Pastor’s novel gripped me by the throat within an hour. The real star here is Agnus—a figure who’s neither saint nor charlatan, but something far more unsettling. Her visions aren’t the sanitized ecstasies of hagiography; they’re feverish, synesthetic bursts where fire speaks and the air hums with unseen voices. Sacco’s narration sells this completely. His delivery during her prophecies is hypnotic, his voice dropping into a guttural whisper that makes you lean in, as if you, too, might hear the flames. That said, the pacing stumbles in the middle. Pastor’s deep dive into provincial politics and Christian sectarian squabbles drags, and Sacco’s otherwise stellar performance can’t fully mask the lull. The audio production is impeccable—subtle ambient sounds (a crackling fire, distant chanting) enhance immersion—but I wished for more dynamic range in the mixing; some of Agnus’s whispered lines get lost if you’re listening in a noisy environment. Still, the finale is worth the slog: a climax that’s equal parts tragic and ambiguous, leaving you wondering if Agnus was ever anything more than a spark in Rome’s long, slow burn. For fans of *The Name of the Rose*’s intellectual tension or *Circe*’s mythic grit, this is a must-listen—just be ready to sit with the discomfort.
