I’ll admit, I approached *Lady of Secrets* skeptical of yet another ‘star-crossed lovers in tumultuous times’ tale. But Carr subverts the trope by making the romance secondary to Henrietta’s mission. This is a woman who risks everything not for a man, but for the power of words—and the love story unfolds as a consequence of that defiance, not the cause of it. The chemistry between Henrietta and her abolitionist counterpart feels earned, simmering in stolen moments between lessons on phonics and coded discussions about safe houses. That said, the middle act drags slightly when the political intrigue overshadows the personal stakes. I found myself fast-forwarding through a few overly detailed debates about abolitionist strategy, eager to return to Henrietta’s classroom where the real drama lives. Clare Radix’s performance is the audiobook’s secret weapon. She avoids the pitfall of ‘performing’ Black dialects, instead letting Henrietta’s voice emerge through cadence and emotional precision. Her portrayal of the white characters, however, occasionally veers into stiffness—particularly with the villainous overseer, whose snarling tone borders on cartoonish. It’s a rare misstep in an otherwise nuanced reading. The production quality is flawless, with no distracting edits or volume inconsistencies, though I wished for more atmospheric sound design (even subtle ambient noise—rustling papers, distant hoofbeats—could’ve deepened the immersion). Still, this is a historical romance that *thinks*, and Radix ensures every word lands with intention. If you’re tired of period dramas where love is the only revolution, this one’s for you.
