The Perfect Play

I went into this expecting a light, fluffy listen—and was pleasantly surprised by how much I ended up caring about these two. Trei Taylor’s narration as Shelby is a masterclass in dry, deadpan delivery; her tone lands every sarcastic remark with perfect timing, making even the most ridiculous arguments feel sharp and believable. Ryan Kailbourne’s portrayal of Chase is a delightful contrast—his smooth, confident cadence sells the arrogance, but he also brings surprising warmth to the rare moments Chase drops the act, hinting at the vulnerability beneath the bravado. That said, the novella’s brevity works against it in places. Shelby’s internal monologues can feel repetitive, and Chase’s redemption arc skips a few beats that would’ve made it more satisfying. The production is crisp, with subtle sound effects that enhance the intimate setting, but I could’ve done without the occasional over-the-top whooshes during Chase’s “charming” moments—they felt like they were pulled straight from a 2010s rom-com parody. Still, the chemistry between the leads is so electric that by the final act, I was fully invested. If you love rom-coms that balance humor with heart, this is a satisfying, quick hit—just don’t expect a deep dive.
