Lady Silver

I’ll be honest: I requested *Lady Silver* expecting another by-the-numbers magic-in-space romp. What I got instead was a story that *hurts* in the best way—like a bruise you keep pressing just to feel the ache. Bryanna D’Isaac is the kind of protagonist who makes terrible decisions for *good* reasons, and Byrd never lets her (or the reader) off the hook for the consequences. The worldbuilding is immersive without being overwrought; the Flow isn’t just a magic system, it’s a *character*, capricious and cruel, and Bryanna’s relationship with it is the most compelling romance in the book. Adam Naranjo’s narration elevates the material significantly. His Bryanna is weary but never whiny, her dark humor delivered with a smirk you can *hear*. The pacing in the first act feels deliberately sluggish—almost too much so—but it’s a trap. By the time the action explodes in the second half, you’re so invested in the stakes that the payoff hits like a freight train. My only real critique? The sound mixing occasionally drowns out Naranjo’s quieter lines during high-tension scenes (a fixable flaw in an otherwise pristine production). And while the villain’s motives could use a touch more depth, the *execution* of their menace is so viscerally effective that I barely cared. This isn’t just a great audiobook—it’s the kind of story that lingers, like the phantom pain of a severed magical bond.
