Landscape with Invisible Hand

I’ll admit, I approached *Landscape with Invisible Hand* with skepticism—another dystopian YA satire? But M.T. Anderson, National Book Award winner and clearly a writer who’s seen the art world’s absurdities firsthand, delivers something far more subversive. His narration is a masterclass in understatement; he reads like a friend who’s just realized how ridiculous the world is, and his dry delivery makes the satire land harder than any over-the-top performance could. The story itself is a tight, uncomfortable tightrope walk between biting humor and genuine pathos. Adam’s desperation to save his family is palpable, even when his methods are morally questionable, and the Vuvv’s detached, consumerist gaze on humanity is chillingly plausible. That said, the pacing occasionally stumbles—some transitions feel abrupt, as if Anderson’s juggling too many ideas at once—and the ending, while thematically satisfying, leaves a few threads feeling unnecessarily tangled. Still, these are minor quibbles. The audiobook’s 3-hour runtime is a masterstroke; it’s short enough to keep from feeling preachy, but dense enough to leave you chewing over its ideas for days. If you want a book that’s as funny as it is unsettling, and narrated by a writer who clearly knows exactly where to aim his scalpel, this is the audiobook for you. Just don’t be surprised if you start questioning the art on your walls afterward.
