About This Audiobook

In this timeless French classic, Stendhal masterfully weaves a tale of Julien Sorel, a young carpenter's apprentice whose insatiable ambition propels him through a treacherous landscape of love, power, and deception. As Julien navigates the complexities of 19th-century French society, he is drawn to two seemingly opposing paths: the clergy and the world of politics. Through Stendhal's razor-sharp observations, we are treated to a scathing critique of the social conventions that govern human behavior.

Michel Vuillermoz's narration brings this period drama to life with a nuanced, almost whispered tone that perfectly captures the inner turmoil of its protagonist. Vuillermoz's subtle inflections and careful pacing create a sense of intimacy and immediacy, drawing listeners into the world of Le rouge et le noir as if by osmosis.

Editor's Review ★★★★

AudioBook Atlas

I must admit, I was initially struck by the slow-burning pacing of Le rouge et le noir, but as I became more fully immersed in Julien's story, I realized that this was no weakness at all. In fact, Stendhal's deliberate pacing allows the reader to absorb the full weight of Julien's experiences, making the novel's dramatic moments all the more impactful. One of the things that struck me most about this audiobook was the way Vuillermoz brings Julien's inner monologue to life. It's a remarkable performance, and one that rewards close attention. That being said, I did find myself wishing for a bit more tension in the novel's later sections – at times, the plotting feels a bit too convenient, and the character of Madame de Rênal feels somewhat one-dimensional. Still, these are minor quibbles in what is otherwise a masterpiece of 19th-century French literature.
