Lorenz, in particular, deserves a standing ovation. Her ability to convey simmering resentment through the simplest phrases—like when she describes Lorraine’s “polite smile, the kind that didn’t reach her eyes”—sent chills down my spine. Adler’s contributions as the framing narrator added another layer, making me question where Lorraine’s story ends and his begins. That said, the first 90 minutes dragged a bit. The setup is deliberate, yes, but there were moments when the payoff didn’t match the pacing investment. Some readers might find the protagonist’s internal monologues excessive, but for me, it worked—it mirrored how obsession distorts perception. The final act, however, is where Rivers shines. The climax isn’t a loud, adrenaline-fueled confrontation but a quiet, devastating reckoning that lingers long after the credits roll. The audiobook’s production deserves praise too; the subtle sound design (think creaking floorboards, distant whispers) makes the domestic setting feel like a pressure cooker ready to explode. If you love psychological thrillers that burrow under your skin, *Little Stranger* is a must-listen—but don’t expect a quick fix. This one lingers.
