Keysian’s hero isn’t some noble savage caricature; he’s a man whose roughness isn’t performative, but a shield against a world that’s tried to break him. And the heroine? She’s no wide-eyed ingenue. Her love is a *choice*, not a surrender, and that distinction makes all the difference. Parslow’s narration sells this tension brilliantly—his voice is rough-hewn yet nuanced, especially in the scenes where the protagonist’s past failures resurface. You can *hear* the weight of her guilt in the way his tone dips, like he’s holding his breath alongside her. That said, the pacing stumbles in the middle. Keysian’s lush descriptions of the forest (which are *gorgeous* in print) occasionally slow the audiobook down, and there’s a subplot involving a secondary character that feels undercooked compared to the white-hot central romance. The production is otherwise flawless—no jarring edits, no inconsistent volume—but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t fast-forward through a few of the longer nature passages on my commute. Still, the final act more than makes up for it. The climax is less about grand gestures and more about quiet, desperate honesty, and Parslow’s delivery in those moments is *devastating*.
