I’ll admit, I was skeptical when I first popped in the headphones and heard Ralph Lister’s voice drop right into my ear like he’d been waiting there for years. But by the third chapter, I was sold—this isn’t just a solid adaptation, it’s a full-body horror experience. Lister’s performance is the kind that makes you lean in closer, afraid to miss a single word, even as your pulse races. The way he modulates his tone—softening for quiet dread, then snapping into a growl during the grotesque set pieces—is masterclass. That said, the story isn’t without its hiccups. The middle act drags slightly as Shan juggles multiple threads, and the resolution feels a tad too tidy for a tale this dark. Still, the strengths far outweigh the stumbles. Shan’s world-building is immersive, the horror grounded in a way that feels disturbingly plausible, and Lister’s narration elevates it to something genuinely unsettling. By the time the final track fades out, you’re left with that delicious, lingering unease—exactly what you want from a horror audiobook. Just maybe don’t listen alone in the dark.
