Loving Cassie

I’ll admit, I was skeptical when I first heard about *Loving Cassie*. Another romance about a Black woman “learning to be herself”? Too often, these stories reduce self-discovery to a neat arc with little friction. But Howard doesn’t just scratch the surface—she claws into the raw, unglamorous process of unlearning performative confidence. Cassie isn’t a heroine; she’s a woman whose armor is crumbling at the worst possible moment, and Bam isn’t a fantasy—he’s a mirror who reflects her worst impulses back at her. Their dynamic is messy, frustrating, and deeply human, which is exactly what makes it work. The narration by Jakobi Diem and Wesleigh Siobhan is a revelation. Diem, voicing Bam, brings a smoky, effortless charisma that makes even his most infuriating moments feel magnetic. Siobhan, as Cassie, nails the duality of her character—her brittle wit masking deep insecurity, her vulnerability flickering through the cracks. The production is crisp, with just enough musical interludes to ground the story in The Prototype’s alt-soul vibe, but never so overpowering that it steals focus. My only critiques? There were a few pacing lulls in the middle where the emotional beats felt too drawn out, and Cassie’s friends, while well-intentioned, occasionally served as mouthpieces for Howard’s themes rather than fully realized characters. But these are minor quibbles in an otherwise electrifying listen. This isn’t just a romance for Black readers or a story about “finding yourself.” It’s a story about the cost of authenticity, the lies we tell to survive, and the reckless courage it takes to love someone when you’re still a work in progress. If you’re here for escapism, go elsewhere. If you’re here for truth, this is your audiobook.
