I pressed play expecting another mafia fling with a side of twinkle-toes morality, but Van Dyken drops you into a moral sewer where the only clean hands belong to the corpses. Cendese chews through the male lead’s growls like he’s auditioning for a mob boss podcast, while Macie nails the heroine’s razor-wire resilience—her vocal cracks sound like real exhaustion, not audiobook drama. The pacing never drags, which is impressive given how much the plot tries to juggle betrayal, explosions, and a sex scene that happens in the back of a speeding car. My only quibble: the government handler’s motives are sketched in crayon, making him feel like a plot tax rather than a threat. Production values are top-tier—gunshots hit your sternum, and the city’s hum feels like it’s vibrating through your phone. If you need romance that remembers violence isn’t a backdrop but a character, this audiobook delivers.
