Travis Baldree’s narration is the secret weapon of this audiobook, turning Vincent’s self-loathing into something visceral and Vincent’s ragtag allies into people you’d follow into a blood-soaked dungeon without hesitation. Baldree nails the contrast between Vincent’s brittle cynicism and the rare moments of vulnerability, his voice dripping with exhaustion one second and crackling with dark humor the next. The production quality is pristine—no distracting mouth clicks or tinny compression here—just a rich, immersive soundscape that makes the Arcanum’s hallowed (and increasingly haunted) halls feel real. That said, Kerei’s worldbuilding occasionally stumbles. Some side characters blur together in the early going, and a few magical rules feel invented on the spot to serve a plot twist. The pacing also stutters in the middle act, where Vincent’s recovery arc drags just enough to remind you this isn’t a breezy 10-hour listen. But these are minor quibbles. By the final act, the story’s emotional payoff hits like a well-placed charm bomb, making the journey worthwhile. If you want fantasy with teeth—and I mean that literally and figuratively—this is your next obsession.
