I’ll admit, I rolled my eyes at the ‘murdered girl gets a second chance’ premise—until Parker opened her mouth. Wylder’s protagonist is a masterclass in unlikeable-yet-compelling characters: she’s petty, reckless, and makes *terrible* decisions, but you’ll root for her anyway because her enemies are even worse. The Virtual Voice narrator sells her snark with perfect timing, though I wish they’d leaned harder into the emotional beats during the darker moments (the scene where Parker confronts her killer could’ve used more raw grit). The academy itself is where the book shines. This isn’t a cozy magical school—it’s a viper pit where professors assign ‘practical exams’ that involve actual bloodshed, and the library’s restricted section contains curses that whisper to you. The romance subplot with the brooding, morally ambiguous love interest avoids insta-love clichés by making their chemistry feel earned (and occasionally toxic). My only real critique? The middle act drags slightly with political intrigue that, while clever, pales next to the breakneck energy of the first and final thirds. Still, the payoff—a twist involving the Phoenix Seed’s true cost—is worth the wait. If you love your fantasy with bite, your heroines with edges, and your magic systems that demand a price, this is a must-listen. Just don’t blame me when you’re up at 3 AM yelling at your headphones.
