Maitre Is Free [Russian Edition]

I’ll admit, I approached *Maitre Is Free* skeptical of yet another ‘magic school’ story, but Lisina flips the script so hard the pages should come with a whiplash warning. The protagonist isn’t a wide-eyed freshman but a jaded transfer student navigating an academy where the faculty’s incompetence is as legendary as their power. Shabrov’s narration is the secret weapon here—his ability to pivot from deadpan humor to sudden, chilling intensity sells the book’s tonal whiplash. When he mutters a spell under his breath like a smoker sneaking a cigarette, you *feel* the exhaustion of a system that’s been broken for centuries. That said, the pacing stumbles in the middle. Lisina’s world is so rich with lore (the history of the academy’s ‘accidental’ time loops could be its own novella) that the plot occasionally drowns in digressions. And while Shabrov’s character voices are stellar, his female characters sometimes slip into a register that feels more ‘caricature’ than ‘character.’ But these are quibbles. The final act—where the stakes hinge on a *grading dispute*—is so audaciously original it erases any earlier frustrations. This isn’t a book about saving the world; it’s about surviving the system, and that’s far more interesting. If you’ve ever rolled your eyes at a ‘prophecy’ plot, this is your antidote.
