I went into *Manaborn 1* expecting another grimdark fantasy with a brooding hero, but Lange and Summerer delivered something far more interesting: a protagonist who’s both the architect of his own downfall and the punchline. The narration is a masterclass in tonal range—Summerer’s delivery of the protagonist’s internal monologue is hilariously self-deprecating, whether he’s riffing on the absurdity of his situation or delivering a scathing one-liner about his so-called allies. The production is crisp, with no awkward pauses or muffled dialogue, which is crucial when the humor relies on timing. That said, the audiobook’s biggest strength is also its occasional stumbling block: Lange’s humor is so dry that a few jokes landed a beat too late in my head, making me wonder if I missed something. The pacing is brisk, but the middle act drags slightly as the protagonist navigates his amnesiac state, which might frustrate listeners expecting nonstop action. Still, by the time the story pivots to full-blown revenge, the payoff is worth the investment. Summerer’s performance sells the emotional beats, particularly in scenes where the protagonist’s vulnerability peeks through the sarcasm. If you’re tired of fantasy protagonists who are all grim resolve and no personality, this audiobook is a refreshing antidote.
