Mars Is for Martians

I went into Mars Is for Martians expecting another Mars colonization epic, but what I got was something far more nuanced. Johnson’s worldbuilding is subtle but deeply effective—less about flashy tech, more about fungal networks that breathe, and animals that shouldn’t exist but do. The story centers on a team of bioengineers tending to these fragile ecosystems, and their growing realization that Mars might already have a will of its own. It’s first contact disguised as environmental science, and it works brilliantly. Rachael Cheeseman’s narration is a standout—her cadence mimics the slow pulse of life adapting, and she gives each character a distinct emotional temperature without overacting. I especially appreciated how she handled the AI voice logs; slightly detached but hauntingly poetic. That said, the pacing drags in the middle third. There’s a stretch where lab reports and ecological assessments slow momentum, and while thematically relevant, they test patience. Also, one subplot involving a missing researcher feels underdeveloped—teased but never fully explored. Still, the final act delivers a payoff that’s both eerie and profound. The sound design is minimal but effective: a hum here, a pressure hiss there—just enough to remind you you’re listening from inside a biodome. This isn’t a thrill ride. It’s a slow seep into something stranger, and for the right listener, that’s exactly what makes it unforgettable.
