Maeve York, meanwhile, gives our heroine a wit so sharp it could cut glass, but her real genius is in the pauses—the way she lets silence hang after a cutting remark, or how her voice softens just a fraction when she’s lying to herself. Their chemistry is electric, even when they’re sniping at each other. That said, the pacing stumbles in the middle. King’s strength is dialogue, and the banter-heavy scenes *sing*, but the plot occasionally spins its wheels with repetitive conflicts (how many times can they almost kiss before it feels like a gimmick?). The hockey elements, though well-researched, sometimes overshadow the emotional beats—like a third-period line change that disrupts the flow. And while the production’s rink ambiance is clever, a few transitions between scenes feel abrupt, as if the editors prioritized mood over smooth narration hand-offs. Still, the final act delivers a payoff that’s equal parts steamy and satisfying, with a grovel that—thankfully—doesn’t rely on grand gestures, just raw, messy honesty.
