The production is impeccable: no distracting edits, just the quiet hum of a story gathering momentum. That said, this isn’t a book for listeners who crave linear plotting. Groff jumps between Marie’s youth and her later years with deliberate disorientation, and the audiobook’s lack of chapter markers (a pet peeve of mine) makes it harder to pause and resume. Some of Marie’s poetic visions—while stunning on the page—can feel abstract in audio, demanding full attention. And Kabst’s performance, though brilliant, occasionally flattens the secondary characters; the nuns’ voices blur together unless you’re deeply engaged.
