About This Audiobook

Lauren Groff’s *Matrix* is a razor-sharp reinvention of the medieval nun’s life, where devotion and ambition collide in a way that feels deliciously modern. Our protagonist, Marie de France, is exiled to a crumbling convent—only to transform it into a fortress of female autonomy. Groff’s prose crackles with wit and historical grit, but it’s the raw undercurrent of queer desire that makes this novel unforgettable. The story refuses to let us settle: Is Marie’s love for the queen thwarted passion or the fuel for her grand design? The answer isn’t settled, and that’s the point. This isn’t a gentle pastoral—it’s a battle cry for women who refuse to be erased, even by the walls of a monastery.

The audiobook’s greatest strength lies in Ilinca Hărnuț’s narration, which breathes life into Marie’s mercurial psyche. Hărnuț’s voice shifts seamlessly from tender to steely, capturing the protagonist’s contradictions without tipping into caricature. Her pacing mirrors Marie’s relentless energy, making the 8-hour runtime feel like a sprint rather than a slog. But don’t mistake this for a conventional historical epic—Groff’s writing is muscular, her dialogue sharp enough to cut, and her worldbuilding immersive without ever drowning in period detail.

AudioBook Atlas

I didn’t expect to fall for *Matrix* the way I did. On paper, a novel about a 12th-century nun building a kingdom of women sounds either dry or overly sentimental. But Lauren Groff’s writing is anything but. Marie de France is a force of nature—brilliant, ruthless, and deeply human—and Hărnuț’s narration sells it. The actress doesn’t just read the words; she channels Marie’s restless, hungry spirit. Her performance is the audiobook’s secret weapon. When Marie delivers a cutting remark or whispers a forbidden thought, Hărnuț’s voice drips with sarcasm or longing, making every scene feel urgent. That said, the production isn’t flawless. The background music is sparse but occasionally distracting, swelling at odd moments like an overzealous film score. And while Groff’s prose is stunning, some passages meander when they should tighten—particularly in the middle act, where the political maneuvers drag a bit. Still, these are minor quibbles. By the final act, *Matrix* had me borderline obsessed, equal parts furious and exhilarated by Marie’s defiance. If you crave a story where women’s desires and ambitions are depicted with zero apology, this audiobook will leave you breathless.
