About This Audiobook

William Makepeace Thackeray’s *The Memoirs of Barry Lyndon* is a razor-edged satire masked as a gentleman’s confession, a literary Trojan horse filled with enough charm and deceit to make even the most polished liar blush. Barry Lyndon—Irish upstart, duelist, and serial manipulator—doesn’t just glide through Regency England’s gilded halls; he storms them, using wit and ruthlessness to claw his way into nobility. Thackeray’s prose crackles with irony, and this audiobook preserves every sneer, every half-truth, and the sheer audacity of a protagonist whose only real talent is self-delusion. The pacing mimics Barry’s own mercurial rise and fall—swift when he’s charming, glacial when he’s calculating—making it a masterclass in narrative sleight of hand that rewards close listening and rewards even more those who catch the deliberate flaws in Barry’s story.

Pedro Montoya’s narration is the secret weapon here. He doesn’t just read Barry’s memoirs; he performs a one-man vaudeville of egotism, slipping between Barry’s faux humility, his boastful swagger, and the brittle edge of a man who knows he’s lying through his teeth. Montoya’s voice drips with the kind of polished cynicism Barry himself would envy, and his timing—pausing just a beat too long after a particularly outrageous claim—turns what could be a dry historical parody into a wickedly entertaining experience. The production captures the novel’s duality: lavish enough to evoke the opulence Barry craves, but with just enough audio grit to remind listeners this is a tale of a man who’d sell his soul for a title.

AudioBook Atlas

I approached this audiobook expecting another stuffy Regency-era relic, but Thackeray and Montoya turned it into a deliciously toxic listen. Montoya’s performance is the kind of bravura work that makes you forgive Barry’s endless narcissism—because, let’s be honest, you’d forgive him too if he told this story. His voice shifts seamlessly: sweetly obsequious when Barry’s schmoozing a wealthy widow, snide when exposing the hypocrisy of the aristocracy, and downright sinister in the rare moments Barry stops talking long enough to let the mask slip. The audio production leans into the story’s theatricality, with subtle echo effects during Barry’s grandest lies that make you feel like you’re standing in a candlelit drawing room, eavesdropping on a scoundrel’s greatest hits. That said, the pacing flags in the final third, where Barry’s descent into irrelevance drags a bit more than it should. Thackeray’s satire still lands—especially in Barry’s self-mythologizing—but Montoya’s energy dips just enough to make the last hour feel like a polite bow instead of a knockout punch. The audiobook also cuts a few of the original memoir’s more digressive chapters, which weakens Barry’s voice as a narrator. Still, these are minor quibbles. The chemistry between Thackeray’s razor-sharp prose and Montoya’s fearless delivery makes this a standout listen for fans of antiheroes who are equal parts hilarious and horrifying. If you’ve ever rolled your eyes at someone you couldn’t help but be fascinated by, this is your audiobook.
