Michael Kirby’s narration sells *Merry Mercenary* as hard as the book’s premise. His Kris Kringle isn’t just a Santa with a sidearm—he’s a full-throated, foul-mouthed action hero with a workshop full of surprises. Kirby nails the balance between menace and mirth, whether Kris is monologuing about muzzle velocity or roasting a corrupted reindeer with the ease of a stand-up comic. The production is crisp, with no muddled audio to distract from the mayhem, though I did catch a few instances where Kirby’s breathy delivery bordered on a whisper mid-battle. If you’re sensitive to gunfire descriptions (and there are *plenty*), this might not be the cozy listen you’re hoping for. The story’s heart lies in its refusal to take itself seriously, even as it escalates from workplace comedy to full-blown warzone. Kris’s journey—from overworked myth to vigilante—is surprisingly emotional beneath the bullets and banter, though the pacing occasionally stumbles when Anderle lingers too long on tactical minutiae. The villains are delightfully despicable, but their motivations blur together in the final act, leaving me wishing for a sharper antagonist. Still, by the time Kris monologues about “the true meaning of Christmas” while dual-wielding assault rifles, you’ll either cheer or question your life choices. Kirby sells it either way.
