Just when you think you’ve pegged the trope—a naive transplant seduced by wealthy vixens—the narrative swerves into something messier and more compelling. Borges’ performance is a masterclass in restraint; she resists the temptation to over-dramatize the erotic scenes, instead letting the tension simmer in her delivery. Her Rebecca sounds like a woman teetering between fascination and self-loathing, which makes the slower first act feel intentional rather than sluggish. That said, the pacing *will* test some listeners. The first three hours meander through Rebecca’s isolation and the community’s passive-aggressive dynamics, and while this builds atmosphere, it occasionally feels like the audiobook equivalent of a slow zoom-in on a dinner party you’re not invited to. The erotic elements, when they arrive, are well-integrated into the power struggles, but they’re not the focus—so if you’re here for wall-to-wall steam, you might leave frustrated. The production is polished, though I docked half a star for a few odd editing choices where background noise bleeds into quiet scenes, breaking the illusion. Still, by the final act, when the women’s alliances fracture spectacularly, I was fully invested.
