The first thing that struck me was Savage’s narration—his voice has a natural rhythm, neither rushed nor plodding, which made Berkowitz’s dense medical and legal jargon feel digestible without ever dumbing things down. There were moments where I found myself leaning in, not just to catch every word but to absorb the weight of what was being described. Savage’s ability to shift from clinical detachment to emotional rawness when describing patients’ struggles was masterful. That said, the book isn’t without flaws. Berkowitz’s writing can veer into self-congratulation at times, which, while understandable given the obstacles he overcame, occasionally undercuts the very humility his mission demands. And while the pacing is generally tight, a few chapters drag when the focus shifts to granular details of trials or lab protocols—necessary for context, sure, but not exactly edge-of-your-seat material. Still, these are minor quibbles. The real payoff comes when Berkowitz dismantles the myths of ‘evidence-based medicine’ as a monolith, replacing them with stories of patients who defied the odds because someone was willing to ask *why* the odds were stacked against them. If you’re tired of feeling like a passive participant in your own health, this audiobook is a wake-up call wrapped in a thriller.
