About This Audiobook

Harlan Coben’s *Missing You* isn’t just another missing persons thriller—it’s a masterclass in suspense where the past refuses to stay buried. The story kicks off with Kat Donovan, a Manhattan cop still raw from her own failed marriage, who stumbles onto a cold case that hits close to home. When a woman’s body is pulled from the Hudson, Kat recognizes the victim’s face immediately: it’s her ex-boyfriend’s first wife, presumed dead years ago. The catch? She disappeared the same night Kat’s father fled after a brutal murder. Coben weaves a web of betrayal, secrets, and simmering rage, keeping listeners guessing until the very last reel.

What makes this audiobook stand out is January LaVoy’s razor-sharp narration, which balances Kat’s weary cynicism with explosive emotional outbursts. LaVoy’s voice cracks with tension during interrogations and drips with quiet dread in the quiet moments, making the audiobook feel like a lived-in nightmare. The production is crisp and immersive, with just enough ambient detail to place you in the gritty underbelly of New York without ever distracting from the story’s relentless pace.

AudioBook Atlas

I’ll admit, I was skeptical when I saw *Missing You* billed as a stand-alone—Harlan Coben’s name usually signals a series I’d need to binge, not a one-off. But this book changed my mind. Kat Donovan is a protagonist who feels real: flawed, stubborn, and haunted by her own mistakes. Her obsession with her father’s crimes and her ex’s past feels earned, not contrived, and Coben’s plot twists land like a sucker punch. The audiobook’s pacing is relentless, with LaVoy’s narration pushing you through like a cop dragging you through a precinct at 3 AM. That said, the ending left me wanting more. Not in terms of satisfaction—Coben wraps things up neatly—but in terms of depth. A few secondary characters, like Kat’s childhood friend, feel underdeveloped, as if they were written to serve a twist rather than stand on their own. And while LaVoy’s performance is stellar, her delivery of male characters occasionally slips into caricature, which jolted me out of the immersion once or twice. Still, these are minor quibbles in an otherwise gripping listen. If you love psychological thrillers that force you to question everyone’s motives, *Missing You* is a must-play.
