I went in expecting a light celebrity audiobook and got something far more substantive. Aziz Ansari’s narration is the reason this works so well. You can hear the disbelief in his voice when a Japanese speed dater describes love as 'efficient,' or the almost-scientific detachment as he recounts showing Tinder screenshots to a 90-year-old woman in Argentina. He doesn’t smooth over the awkwardness—he amplifies it, and that’s what makes it honest. The pacing is brisk, never lingering too long on data, but the interviews (especially with sociologist Eric Klinenberg) add real depth. The humor lands consistently, but what surprised me was how moving certain sections were—like when he talks about how digital overload makes intimacy harder, not easier. That said, the middle drags slightly when listing regional dating habits—it’s informative, but needs more narrative glue. Also, I could’ve used more perspective on LGBTQ+ experiences beyond a few passing mentions. Still, as an audio experience, this is leagues beyond most celebrity-authored books. It’s smart, funny, and strangely comforting. If you’ve ever overanalyzed a text or panicked after an unanswered 'Hey,' this will feel like therapy with better punchlines.
