About This Audiobook

John Ringo’s *Monster Hunter Memoirs: Grunge* delivers a chaotic, action-packed adventure where the supernatural is just another Tuesday. Chad Garden, an average nobody, gets drafted into Monster Hunters International (MHI) to fight everything from vampires to interdimensional horrors. What follows is less a traditional hero’s journey and more like watching a meth-head bar fight through a kaleidoscope—relentless, unpredictable, and darkly hilarious. Ringo’s worldbuilding is dense but never overwhelming, blending military precision with Lovecraftian dread and a healthy dose of snark. The tone oscillates between hard-boiled action and absurdist comedy, making it a standout in a genre crowded with either grimdark or sanitized fantasy. If you crave stories where the stakes are sky-high but the heroes are gloriously flawed, this is your audiobook.

The audiobook gold lies in Oliver Wyman’s narration, which elevates the material with a gravelly, no-nonsense voice that perfectly suits Chad’s working-class cynicism. Wyman nails the tonal shifts, balancing rapid-fire exposition with deadpan humor and the occasional horror-struck whisper. His performance makes the monsters feel monstrous without resorting to over-the-top theatrics, grounding the fantastical elements in a grittier reality. The pacing is brisk, sometimes to a fault—if you’re sensitive to abrupt scene cuts, you might feel whiplash. But for fans of Ringo’s signature style, this is a feature, not a bug.

Editor's Review ★★★★☆

AudioBook Atlas

I went into *Grunge* expecting another military-inspired urban fantasy, but Ringo and Wyman turned that expectation into a dumpster fire—and I mean that in the best way possible. Wyman’s narration is the secret weapon here; his voice has the weight of a guy who’s seen too much and doesn’t care anymore, which is exactly how Chad Garden feels. There are moments where Oliver delivers lines like *“Oh, fantastic. Another eldritch abomination with a god complex”* with such dry delivery that I snorted-laughed on my commute. The production quality is top-notch, with clear, well-balanced audio that makes the creature voice effects feel immersive without being cheesy. That said, *Grunge* isn’t without its rough edges. The book’s humor can skew juvenile at times, and Ringo’s love for acronyms and military jargon occasionally spirals into TL;DR territory for those not versed in the lingo. The pacing also stutters in places, with some chapters ending on abrupt cliffhangers that resolve too quickly or drag in others. But these flaws are minor in a tale where a sentient, murderous ATV and a vampire rock band become pivotal characters. If you’re craving a fantasy adventure that’s equal parts *XCOM* and *South Park*, with a side of existential dread, this audiobook delivers. Just don’t expect subtlety.
