About This Audiobook

John Hood’s *Mountain Folk* isn’t your grandmother’s fairy tale—it’s a gritty, time-bending fantasy where the old rules of magic don’t apply. Goran, a rare fairy who thrives in the human world’s accelerated timeline, navigates a landscape where colonial America feels both familiar and alien. Hood’s worldbuilding is meticulous, blending historical texture with a fresh twist on fairy lore, making the Blur feel like a character all its own. The stakes aren’t just about survival; they’re about defying the natural order of time itself. This isn’t a whimsical romp—it’s a survival story where every hour counts, and magic comes with a price. For listeners tired of cookie-cutter fantasy, *Mountain Folk* delivers a narrative that’s as intellectually rich as it is immersive. The audiobook’s length is its only flaw—just long enough to make you wish it never ended.

Benjamin Fife’s narration is the icing on this idiosyncratic cake. His voice crackles with the weariness of a fairy who’s seen too much, but his performance never drags. He balances Goran’s quiet determination with the urgency of a man racing against time, and his distinct character voices—especially the gruff Rangers—add layers without overdoing it. The production is crisp, letting the story’s tension simmer without distraction. Hood’s prose translates seamlessly to audio, making this a rare case where the medium enhances the material.

Editor's Review ★★★★☆

AudioBook Atlas

I’ve listened to my fair share of audiobooks, but *Mountain Folk* left me reeling in the best way. Fife’s narration is a masterclass in restraint—he never overacts, but his voice carries the weight of Goran’s exhaustion and the eerie, relentless passage of time in the Blur. The story’s slow-burn tension pays off in spades, especially in the third act, where Hood’s pacing tightens like a noose. The colonial setting feels authentic, not just a backdrop but a force shaping the fairies’ struggle, which is a refreshing change from the usual European fantasy standards. That said, the book could’ve used a firmer editorial hand in the first third. Goran’s motivations take a while to crystallize, and a few too many infodumps about the Rangers Guild bog down the opening. But once the story gains momentum—around the two-hour mark—it’s nearly impossible to pause. The audiobook’s runtime is daunting, but Fife’s performance kept me hooked. If you love fantasy that thinks outside the (fairy) box, this is your next obsession. Just be prepared for some early slogging.
