The audiobook’s structure is smart, too: it doesn’t just chronicle kills but traces the gang’s evolution from disciplined soldiers to unhinged liabilities, with each phase marked by a shift in Bevine’s delivery. His performance is masterful in its restraint; he never slips into caricature, even when voicing the gang’s dark humor (like their nickname for a dismemberment tool: *“the bone crusader”*). That said, the audiobook isn’t without flaws.
