The audiobook’s standout is the chapter on the unsolved 1970s Boston Strangler copycat case, where Phelps argues for a long-overlooked suspect. Pierce’s tone shifts from detective-like curiosity to outright dread as the pieces fall into place—it’s the kind of performance that makes you pause the audio just to process what you’ve heard. That said, the production has one noticeable hiccup: the mid-chapter sound effects (footsteps, creaking doors) are distractingly low-fidelity, like they were added in post-production by someone who thought ambiance mattered more than clarity.
