I’ll admit: I approached *Mutanten in Not* skeptical. Perry Rhodan’s universe can feel like a relic—all silver jumpsuits and uncritical tech-worship. But Lukas flips the script. This isn’t about humanity’s triumphant march into the stars; it’s about the people left behind when the future doesn’t fit. The mutants here aren’t heroes. They’re *problems*—some dangerous, some pitiable, all caught in systems that weren’t built for them. The story’s best moments are quiet: a mutant child hiding her abilities from classmates, a scientist rationalizing ethical compromises, a politician spinning a crisis into a photo op. It’s *Babylon 5*’s political intrigue meets *The X-Men*’s existential dread, but with a distinctly European flavor—less cape-fluttering, more cigarette smoke and paperwork. Hanno Dinger’s performance sells it. His narration has a gravelly, lived-in quality that grounds even the most outlandish scenarios. He doesn’t *act* the mutants as much as he *embodies* their exhaustion, which makes the rare bursts of action hit harder. My only gripe? The audiobook’s pacing sometimes drags in the middle, when Lukas indulges in bureaucratic tangents that, while realistic, test the listener’s patience. And while Dinger’s character voices are strong, a few secondary characters blur together—distinguishable more by context than vocal distinctness. Still, the payoff is worth it. The finale doesn’t offer easy answers, just the bitter satisfaction of a story that respects its characters enough to let them fail.
