About This Audiobook

My Pet Werewolf isn’t your typical supernatural thriller—it’s a raw coming-of-age story wrapped in fur, blood, and buried family trauma. Eighteen-year-old Brady wrestles with guilt over his father’s death, a wound only deepened by his manipulative stepfather and the growing fear that his twin sister is in danger. When strange events begin to spiral in the woods behind their isolated home, Brady uncovers something impossible: a wounded werewolf he begins to care for like a brother. James Kaine blends psychological tension with body horror in a way that feels both intimate and unnerving, elevating the horror beyond cheap jumpscares into something emotionally resonant. Christopher Harbour’s narration is a masterclass in restraint and emotional precision. He gives Brady a voice that’s guarded yet vulnerable, capturing the internal friction of a teen clinging to control. The pacing builds like a tightening noose, with Kaine slowly peeling back layers of deception and denial. What sets this audiobook apart is how it treats the werewolf not as a monster, but as a twisted mirror of Brady’s own rage and grief. The soundscape—subtle, atmospheric, never overdone—adds texture without distracting. If you crave horror with emotional weight and a performance that lives in the character’s skin, this one claws its way under yours.

Editor's Review ★★★★☆

AudioBook Atlas

I went into My Pet Werewolf expecting campy horror, but what I got was something far more unsettling: a grief-stricken teenager bonding with a creature that might be his only ally. Christopher Harbour’s narration sold me from the first line—his delivery is understated but loaded, making every hesitation and whispered thought feel earned. The way he handles the stepfather’s oily charm versus Brady’s raw inner monologue creates a chilling contrast. The first half is slow, almost too deliberate, and I’ll admit I questioned if the payoff would justify the buildup. But around the halfway mark, everything clicks—the werewolf’s identity, the family secrets, the haunting parallels between man and beast—all converge in a finale that’s equal parts tragic and cathartic. That said, the climax leans a bit too heavily on internal monologue, and at times the prose becomes repetitive when Brady spirals emotionally. Still, the atmosphere is immaculate, and the sound design—dripping woods, distant howls, muffled growls—is just immersive enough without going full theatrical. This isn’t a horror audiobook for those who want gore and adrenaline. It’s for listeners who like their monsters personal, their truths painful, and their narrators perfectly in tune with the characters’ broken hearts.
